Working out at work: a guide from someone who does it best

Some of my most successful clients have found a genius way to fit a workout into their day without waking up early, staying out late or giving up a moment of family time.  At first glance, this method might sound totally impossible and completely illogical, but for Dawn, it has made all the difference.  


Dawn works out with me on her lunch hour at work, and switching from before and after work to afternoons has gotten her more fit than she ever thought possible.  Sounds too good to be true?  Don't take my word for it!  See for yourself how Dawn's experience has changed her body, her job and her relationships.

G: What made you finally decide to take the leap and try a lunch-hour office workout?

Dawn: Originally, waking up early seemed like the best way to get my workout in without interrupting my day.   It definitely kept my evenings open, but I felt that I was less productive because I am just not a morning person.  Nights didn't really work either, because my brain was shot from work and I either needed to skip dinner so I didn't feel sick, or eat a light dinner and hope to avoid stomach cramps.  When we started I was nervous to deal with being sweaty at the office, but the afternoon workout idea felt like it would solve all of my problems because it was fast, convenient and a good way to break up my work day.


G: Besides saving you time in your day, what other benefits have you found from a work day workout?

D: When I get back to my desk, I have a much clearer head and am so much more productive than I used to be.  As soon as I sit down, I feel like I'm ready to tackle part two of my day.


G: Alright, so let's address everyone's top concern: how do you go from sweaty to work-ready after your workouts?

D: Let me start by saying that that was my number one fear in the beginning, but it is so much easier than I thought it would be!  I have body wipes that I use after working out to freshen up, then I apply new deodorant and some perfume and I'm good to go.  I put the same clothes back on because they're going in the laundry at the end of the day anyway, but I truly never feel gross after I've changed.  I've gotten to a point now where I'm much more concerned about my workout than about how I look for the second half of the day.  Everyone at the office knows how serious I am about my goals, and they respect me so much more for being dedicated than for having perfect hair or makeup. I guess the only thing that never quite looks the same is my hair, but I throw it in a ponytail or a bun and it's fine. I never look or feel gross or out of place.


G: Have you had any issue with your workouts interfering with your work day?

D: Not at all.  The half hour workouts are prefect because I change into my workout clothes, you kick my butt and I still have time to change back and grab lunch before I have to be at my desk.  


G: Is it challenging to pack a bag and have all of your workout equipment with you?

D: It's not challenging, I just have to be prepared the night before.  I pack my clothes and sneakers with me, but I leave my body wipes, hair brush, hair bands, deodorant, makeup and hair spray at my desk so I can't forget them.


G: What advice would you give to someone thinking about working out at work?

D: Make a plan that works with your schedule and do it.  There's no better way to spend your lunch break.  You'll feel better, you'll perform better and you'll have so much more free time outside of work.  


G: How do you feel about your colleagues seeing you workout in your office or, when it's nice outside, in the parking lot?

D: I love it! At first it was weird, but now so many people want to join me.  When we started, I was worried that they'd think I was crazy, but they're definitely supportive and maybe even a little jealous... coffee is nice, but it can't create endorphins! 


Since working out on her lunch break, Dawn has gone on to run multiple marathons, obstacle courses and even completed a half Iron Man.
